Why Is My Video File So Big?
Because of pixels per second, almost always. A video file's size is its bitrate multiplied by its length, and the bitrate a camera chooses is driven by how many pixels it is recording and how often. Everything else is a rounding error next to that.
The arithmetic behind the number
1080p at 30 fps is 62 million pixels a second. 4K at 60 fps is 498 million — eight times as many. A phone recording 4K60 writes around 45–50 Mbps to keep that clean, which is about 400 MB per minute. Ten minutes is 4 GB, and none of that is a fault.

The four reasons, in order of blame
- Resolution. 4K carries four times the pixels of 1080p. If the video will be watched on a phone or in a chat window, three-quarters of that is being stored for nobody.
- Frame rate. 60 fps doubles the work of 30. Worth it for sport and action; invisible on a person talking.
- A deliberately high recording bitrate. Cameras record with headroom so the footage survives editing and grading. It is a working format, not a delivery format.
- The codec. H.264 needs roughly 30–40% more bitrate than H.265 for the same quality. An older camera or a screen recorder writing H.264 produces noticeably larger files.
What makes the biggest difference
Downscaling. Going from 4K to 1080p removes 75% of the pixels before the encoder even starts, and on any screen smaller than a television nobody can tell. Lowering quality helps too, but it is the second lever, not the first — an under-bitrate 4K file looks worse than a clean 1080p one of the same size, every time.
What does not help
Putting the file in a ZIP. Video is already compressed, and general-purpose compressors have nothing left to find — expect to save one or two per cent for the inconvenience of a file nobody can play without unzipping it.
