Compress Video for a Faster YouTube Upload
YouTube re-encodes everything you upload, into several renditions, using its own settings. So the goal is not a small file — it is a file that survives YouTube's transcode well while not taking an hour to upload.
YouTube's own recommendations

Container MP4, video H.264, audio AAC at 384 kbps for stereo. Those are YouTube's published numbers, and they are deliberately generous: they want headroom before their encoder takes its share.
What that means for compressing
Do not squeeze hard before uploading. Every bit you remove is detail YouTube's encoder never sees, and its own compression comes on top of yours. If your export is already at or near the recommended bitrate, upload it as it is.
Compress before uploading only in these cases:
- Your file is far above the recommendation — a 200 Mbps ProRes master, say. Encoding to 8–16 Mbps H.264 first saves hours of upload with no visible cost.
- Your connection makes the upload impractical. A 4 GB file on a slow line is a long evening; 1080p at 8 Mbps is far less painful.
- You are uploading 4K purely for the bitrate. YouTube allocates more bits to 2160p than to 1080p, so some creators upload 1080p footage upscaled to 4K. It works, but the file gets much bigger — a trade, not a free win.
Audio is where people under-spend
YouTube re-encodes audio to Opus or AAC around 128 kbps, but it does that from what you gave it. Uploading 96 kbps audio to be re-encoded again is how music ends up sounding thin. Keep audio high on the upload — 192 kbps or better, or copy the original track.
